Marcus A. Shields joined the firm in 2026 as a senior litigator handling the defense of complex litigation, premises liability, and insurance matters for businesses and individuals in hearings, trials and appeals. Marcus’ practice also includes guardianship, trust and estates litigation, and other fiduciary litigation matters. Marcus began his legal career in private practice in Eastern North Carolina, representing individuals and businesses in civil litigation, family law, fiduciary litigation, and criminal defense. He transitioned his practice to Raleigh, North Carolina, and worked as a Post-Conviction Attorney with North Carolina Prisoner Legal Services, Inc. in Raleigh, North Carolina. Afterward, he became an Assistant Public Defender at the Guilford County Public Defender’s Office in Greensboro, North Carolina.

In May 2018, Marcus was appointed as a District Court Judge for the State of North Carolina by former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, a role he successfully held after winning the 2020 election. As a District Court Judge, he presided over civil, family, and criminal, and juvenile matters in every district courtroom in Guilford County, North Carolina. Marcus also served as a presiding recovery court judge for juveniles in Guilford County Juvenile Drug Treatment Court and adults in Guilford County Mental Health Court. His tenure as a judge was marked by his unwavering commitment to justice and fairness.

Since leaving the bench, Marcus has continued serving as a nimble and savvy litigator in private practice and government, representing individuals, businesses, and government agencies in complex civil litigation. Marcus is a skilled trial attorney who brings more than a decade of legal and procedural knowledge to assist his clients in achieving their legal objectives.

Marcus was born and raised in Sumter, South Carolina. When not practicing law, he enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends and his four dogs.
